About Global Coptic Day
The Inception of Global Coptic Day
Global Coptic Day (GCD) is a celebration of the Coptic Orthodox Church’s rich heritage and its indelible history of martyrdom, persecution, theological education, monasticism, iconography, hymnology, and steadfastness in the Orthodox faith. The inaugural GCD was celebrated on June 1, 2019. The idea for GCD was proposed by Nader Anise, an Egypt-born founder of the Coptic American Chamber of Commerce, to Bishop Youssef of the Southern United States in October 2018. It received enthusiastic endorsement from Bishop Youssef and, within a month, the blessing of Pope Tawadros II at the St. Bishoy Monastery in Wadi El Natroun, Egypt.
Significance of June 1st
June 1st was chosen for GCD as it coincides with the Feast of the Holy Family’s Flight into Egypt, a significant event in the Coptic tradition that symbolizes the Holy Family’s journey and refuge in the land of Egypt. This day unites Copts worldwide in a global celebration, encouraging research into the Coptic Church and fostering a sense of unity and pride in the Coptic heritage.
Recognition and Celebrations
In the years 2019 and 2020, President Donald Trump and the First Lady congratulated the Copts on GCD by writing a Presidential Letter, which was sent electronically and mailed on official White House stationery1. President Trump’s message highlighted the contributions, legacy, and ongoing challenges facing the largest Christian group in the Middle East. He also emphasized the importance of religious freedom and reaffirmed the commitment to promoting and defending this core tenet of a free society
Global Coptic Day Activities
GCD is widely spread on social platforms, with churches worldwide calling Christians to fill this day with P.R.A.I.S.E:
Pray, Read, Acts of mercy, Invite, Serve, and Educate. These activities are designed to honor the Coptic Orthodox Church’s traditions and to reach out to both Copts and non-Copts all over the world. The day is filled with prayers dedicated to the peace of the Coptic Orthodox Church, reading stories of Coptic saints and martyrs, acts of mercy, invitations to friends and co-workers to attend Coptic services, providing community services, and using social media to educate the public about the Coptic Church
